There is a wide array of malnutrition symptoms that can vary depending on the cause and time period of malnourishment. The primary red flags for malnutrition include fatigue, dizziness, and weight loss. You may experience these symptoms early on. It's important to start treating these symptoms before they progress. As the body is continuously deprived of necessary nutrients, it is more vulnerable to infection and, in severe cases, death. Once someone has an infection or illness, they are less likely to get all the nutrients they need, leading to a progressed case of malnutrition. It is important to be cautious of this cycle as not to cause permanent damage to the body.
More severe symptoms of malnutrition include difficulty completing basic every day activities. When the body does not get the nutrients it needs, fat and muscle stores are broken down and used for energy. This deterioration causes decreased respiratory rate, cardiac function, and therefore, inability to complete simple tasks.
In young children, malnutrition cases are extremely serious. They are still growing and need nutrients to support this growth and development. If they are not eating a proper diet, they will not reach their full physical development. In severe cases, children who suffer from malnourishment will never reach their full academic potential either, leading to learning disabilities and other complications.
In the event of fainting, lack of menstruation in women, lack of growth in children, and rapid hair loss, a medical professional must be contacted to treat these severe symptoms of malnourishment.
